THE SHOUTCAST STREAMING SERVER aka YOUR RADIO STATION If you are a DJ and you want other people to tune into your broadcast you need to get access to a stream server. I have used ShoutCast servers http://www.shoutcast.com for years. The Shoutcast Streaming Server Web Address will look like this http://www.MYSHOUTCASTSERVERNAME.com:PORTNUMBER http:www.MYSHOUTCASTSERVERNAME.com:6666 or http://MYSHOUTCASTSERVERNUMBER:PORTNUMBER http:666.666.666.666:6666 I often use a friends server at http://d-oo-b.cc:9777 CONNECTING TO THE SHOUTCAST STREAM SERVER In addition to the web address and port number there is a password for the broadcaster. You will use these 3 pieces of information along with your favorite DJing app to broadcast up to the shoutcast stream server. I use a mac and there are few options for apps that connect to shoutcast servers. My favorate app is a small FREE app called MacAmp Lite X at http://www.macamplite.com If you have a PC you can start with an app like WinAmp and use the Shoutcast Plug-in available at http://www.shoutcast.com/download Either way you are just opening a connection between your computer and the shoutcast stream server that your listeners are going to tune into to listen to you. So launch the app, enter the server address, the port number, the password and then select connect. You should now have an open connection to your shoutcast server and anything you send will be heard by your listeners. With an app like MacAmp Lite X you can make a play list of MP3 and then play them up to the shoutcast stream server. The app also supports a mic input. This allows you to plug the output from your mixer into the mic input on your computer so you can then stream it up to the server. You can then plug in your turntables, samplers, effects processors and mic into your computer and stream it to listeners. I have even pluged in a Roland SP-808 Groove Station Mix Studio which is an awesome mixer to bring all kinds of crazy stuff into your computer and up to your shoutcast stream server. LISTENERS TUNING IN TO THE SHOUTCAST STREAM SERVER Once you are broadcasting tune into your stream server to make sure you are playing loud and clear. Then share your shoutcast server address (Example http:www.MYSHOUTCASTSERVERNAME.com:6666) to allow listeners to tune in and listen to you. Tweet it, IM it to friends, Post it to your blog, etc. Your shoutcast server address (Example http:www.MyShoutCastServer.com:6666) can be used and listened to over the Internet in many ways. For example people can enter it into their WinAmp or iTunes app and listen to your radio stream live while you play. It can also be put into applications like Second Life so friends who are on your land can hear you play live. Finally it can also be entered into applications like iRecordMusic http://www.bitcartel.com/irecordmusic and a listener can then record your broadcast. Which is how I record the sets I broadcast LIVE. |
